If you have mastered the fundamentals of board work but want to elevate your contribution further at a time when the role of the board is undergoing significant change, then the Advanced Board Programme is for you.
The focus is on the conversations, decisions, and dynamics that create real value when companies must navigate global uncertainty, technological disruption, AI, and shifting market conditions.
Over three intensive days at INSEAD, you will gain access to international research, current cases, and practical perspectives from leading experts in board work, the global economy, AI, and board leadership. The programme combines expert-led teaching with high-level peer-to-peer learning, where participants’ own experiences and dilemmas form a central part of the learning.
You will become part of a confidential forum with other senior board members and top executives, where reflection, exchange of experience, and professional relationships are an integral part of the programme.
For the experienced board professional
As a participant, you are already navigating decision-making environments where time, information, ownership dynamics, market conditions, and leadership considerations must be carefully balanced. The Advanced Board Programme is designed to give you new perspectives, sharper questions, and a stronger foundation for challenging, qualifying, and further developing the work of the board.
The programme provides you with concrete tools to strengthen the board’s strategic outlook, scenario thinking, capacity for learning, and interaction with the chair, owners, and executive management.
Programme content
During the programme, we work with current themes that are particularly relevant to senior board professionals.
Navigating an uncertain global economy
We examine the economic and geopolitical developments that influence companies’ strategic room for manoeuvre. The session provides a framework for understanding a multipolar global economy, changing growth patterns, demographic shifts, productivity challenges, globalisation under pressure, debt challenges, and the consequences of shifting political priorities.
The focus is on how the board can use macroeconomic insights to challenge strategic assumptions, work with robust scenarios, and qualify decisions about markets, growth, and risks.
Boards in turbulent times
When the external environment is marked by adversity, complexity, and uncertainty, the demands placed on the board’s work change. We examine how boards can strengthen the way they work and move from calendar-driven agendas to more context-driven agendas.
You will gain perspectives on scenario-based strategic dialogue, clearer interaction with management, and a more deliberate distribution of roles between control, qualification, and co-creation. We also explore how board learning can become a genuine governance capability.
AI and the board
AI is addressed both as a strategic theme that the board needs to understand and as a potential tool for strengthening the board’s own work. The programme explores the opportunities and risks of AI copilots and autonomous agents in a board context.
The focus is on governance, confidentiality, accountability, judgement, and strategic relevance. You will have the opportunity to reflect on how AI can be applied without weakening independence, critical thinking, or the quality of human decision-making.
The role of the chair and board leadership
The chair plays a crucial role in creating the conditions for an effective board. We work with what characterises a strong chair, how the chair leads the board, engages owners, and collaborates with executive management.
The sessions combine INSEAD’s research with participants’ own experiences and provide practical perspectives on board dynamics, learning, dialogue, and decision-making in the boardroom.
Programme focus
The programme is built on three core principles:
- High-level peer-to-peer learning: Participants learn from each other’s experiences in an environment designed for open, confidential, and informed dialogue.
- Research-based knowledge from INSEAD: The programme connects international governance research with the dilemmas and decision-making situations faced by senior boards.
- Relevance to today’s board agenda: The programme focuses on themes that are already shaping the work of boards: global economic uncertainty, AI, scenario thinking, decision quality, learning capability, and the role of the chair.
Participant profile
The Advanced Board Programme is a board education programme that requires a high level of knowledge and experience in board work.
